Notice to the Residents of Cochrane - Hard Water Update Notice #3

Infrastructure Services is notifying residents that the water softening system at the Water Treatment Plant continues to be non-functional. Unfortunately, the system is aged and sourcing replacement parts has been extremely difficult.

Update – January 24, 2025

We are pleased to provide an update on the water softening system repairs. After speaking with the parts provider, we have been informed that all but one of the necessary parts will be shipped to us within the next two weeks. One remaining part typically takes 7-8 weeks to arrive, but the provider is hopeful it may be shipped by February 17th due to their expedited timeline.

As a reminder, the age of the current system has contributed to delays in sourcing parts. To streamline the process, we have arranged for the same firm to install both the replacement parts and the new system when it arrives. The new water softening system was ordered on January 23 on an emergency basis. Delivery is expected in May/June, and we have already engaged the firm to handle the installation.

We will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available. We understand the difficulties in using hard water. Thank you for your continued patience and understanding.

What This Means for You

During this period, customers will continue to receive water that is harder than usual. Hard water, caused by naturally occurring minerals such as calcium and magnesium, does not affect the safety or quality of the water—it remains safe for consumption.

However, hard water may cause:

  • Spots on glasses, dishes, and fixtures.
  • A chalky buildup known as limescale in water-heating appliances, kettles, and pipes over time.

Tips to Minimize Effects

  • Dishware: Hand wash dishes or towel-dry them immediately after the dishwasher rinse cycle to reduce spotting.
  • Existing Spots: Soak glasses or other items with spots in white vinegar for 5 to 10 minutes to remove buildup.
  • Appliances: Consider descaling kettles or other appliances using a white vinegar solution.
