Notice to the Residents of Cochrane - Hard Water Update

January 15, 2025 – Infrastructure Services is notifying residents that the water softening system at the Water Treatment Plant continues to be non-functional. Unfortunately, the system is aged and sourcing replacement parts has been extremely difficult.

What This Means for You
During this period, customers will continue to receive water that is harder than usual. Hard water, caused by naturally occurring minerals such as calcium and magnesium, does not affect the safety or quality of the water—it remains safe for consumption.

However, hard water may cause:
• Spots on glasses, dishes, and fixtures.
• A chalky buildup known as limescale in water-heating appliances, kettles, and pipes over time.

Tips to Minimize Effects
• Dishware: Hand wash dishes or towel-dry them immediately after the dishwasher rinse cycle to reduce spotting.
• Existing Spots: Soak glasses or other items with spots in white vinegar for 5 to 10 minutes to remove buildup.
• Appliances: Consider descaling kettles or other appliances using a white vinegar solution.

Next Steps
We are pleased to inform you that the necessary parts for the water softening system have been sourced. While not guaranteed, the parts are expected to arrive in 2 to 3 weeks. Infrastructure Services is working diligently to complete the repairs and restore the softening system as quickly as possible.

We are committed to keeping you informed, and additional updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
